what conducts heat faster? Stainless steel or glass?
Intuitively, I would think that stainless steel conducts heat faster. I saw an advertisement for stainless steel wine glasses that said "keeps your wine chilled longer than glassware". That kind of sounds ridiculous to me, but hey I could be wrong.
You are quite right in that stainless steel has a much higher thermal conductivity than glass.
The devil is in the detail. Stainless steel also has a lower specific heat capacity than glass. But where are you starting from, what are your initial conditions?
If you "pre-chill" your glasses by sticking them in the freezer for ten minutes, the stainless steel will give up more of its stored heat energy than the glass, and end up at a lower temperature.
It could all be about perception. I'm guessing that anyone posting under a Canadian flag will appreciate the different 'feel' to a metal or glass object that has been left outside overnight in winter!
